Catching Cupid's arrow mid-air

Cupid is my most favorite, and sometimes most exasperating person.
Life is fine and wonderful when he strikes and we all merrily go along,
joyful at finding a mate. But sometimes, at that very moment, dear Cupid will play a prank and try to hit with one more arrow. And one stands there wondering what in the world.....
Sometimes I want to catch Cupid as he flies by, hold him in a passionate embrace, complete with a liplock he'll never forget.....A slow, teasing, wet one. Might as well, if he exasperates me like this.

I'm a true romantic. I'm honest in my relationships and fidelity is very important to me. Generally, it is hard to find a lover that satisfies the heart's every desire. It is unrealistic to expect that. Even we can't fulfill all our mate's desires. Maybe we're not made that way. We accept this and go along merrily, but along comes someone with those very qualities and....Cupid, wait!!!!!

Nobody expects such things. We (at least most people) go into a relationship wholeheartedly, committing oneself fully. The partner is very compatible, we love them, and adapt ourselves to them. They may be an 80% match and in the joy of finding them, we don't worry about the 20%. If we do, we brush it off as unimportant. But when a new person reminds one of what's missing in life....what do we do?? What does one do with those unfulfilled desires? We can

a) chuck them
b) fulfill them with the new person
c) communicate desire with current partner and ask for fulfillment

a) is highly unsatisfactory. That's what brought things to this pass anyway.....It is basically suppressing a part of oneself that may later open up like a Pandora's box and cause misery. Using a) more diligently this time will cause a part of us to die a slow, painful death and we may never be the same again. b) is very dishonest and not at all appealing in the ethical sense - not to mention it hurts one's partner. How would we feel if our partner did this to us? c) seems like the best choice but stands the risk of partner interpreting this as a "demand" and resenting us for communicating. Especially if they aren't made that way. But IMO, c) is worth that risk.

As for the new person, what does one do? We can:

a) avoid them
b) cut them off
c) continue to relate to them. We basically like them, and they add to our life's richness. But we need to hold off and give them "legal" affection - as in friendship, being there in need, and caring....What about the sparks? Maybe if one doesn't fan the flames, they'll stay just in a corner of the heart, providing a warm glow that doesn't interfere with reality. This humbling experience will remind us that we are only human, and make us more sympathetic to fellow fragile humans.

c) seems like the best choice again - but gosh, its the most difficult. It means catching Cupid's arrow mid-air, and taking the pain of this action. The arrow wounds the catcher, and our body and soul shake with the impact. But at least the heart is where it should be - with one's mate.

Sigh! Love is not for the faint of heart.
